Artist Statement by photographer

I'm serious about the craft of photography. Aspects of my shoots are carefully planned and controlled: location, color, lighting, wardrobe, composition, lens focal length, etc. Nearly every decision I make is a conscious one. However, the process of creating an image is very much collaborative. I generally work with a team which consists of a makeup artist, assistant, and the model/s.

Martial arts/exotic weapons are often incorporated into my photographs. I love to portray a sense of danger and give the models a commanding, idealistic-quality. My goal is also to make hard-edged images that look natural and unposed. Even if the scene is surreal, I strive to make the model looking strong, believable, and in her element.

I am interested in shooting photographs in full color. My print work is large-scale, with photographic-process color prints. Producing sharp, well-crafted images at a large format is much more challenging than creating for the web. I consider my work fine art (that is, intended to hang on a gallery wall) and for me it is certainly a labor of love.

Presently, I reside in Madison shooting with a full-frame digital SLR camera and various prime lenses with focal lengths ranging from 35-85mm. I prefer to shoot outdoors in urban industrial areas, but winters have forced my shoots indoors for much of the year. Shooting on-location allows me to thrive creatively since each session uses an entirely different environment.
